Don Smart
A famous American writer once said: "Knowledge is like money: to be of value it must circulate, and in circulating it can increase in quantity and in value."
Don Smart applies that principle every day, adding value to his clients' bottom line by sharing his extensive knowledge of the group benefits and insurance industry. With more than 25 years in the industry, Don has learned a thing or two about business, teamwork, and customer service. He began his career after graduating from St. Mary's University in Halifax when he joined one of the country's largest insurance providers. Don developed a thorough understanding of the many different insurance products available, but increasingly found success in group benefits. Within three short years, Don rose through the ranks to become one of the company’s top employees in group insurance sales.
Over the next 13 years, Don held senior positions in group and corporate insurance with leading plan providers. He established and managed regional offices, and built strong relationships in Southern Ontario working directly with a brokers, consultants and intermediaries.
In 1999, Don joined a multi-line brokerage helping that organization develop its benefits business. Don's knowledge and expertise helped countless companies achieve maximum value for their investment in a benefits program by matching their needs with the most cost-effective plans available.
Don formed his own employee benefits consulting firm in 2010 and became one of the principals of The Winch Group.
In addition to a Bachelor of Commerce degree, Don holds the professional designation of Group Benefits Advisor (GBA). Don is a firm believer in lifelong learning, and he makes it his priority to put himself "in the customer's shoes", learning as much as he can about their business, culture, and goals and objectives. Sometimes this means rolling up the sleeves and working alongside his clients to ensure problems get resolved. Don takes pride in doing what he says...getting things done for his clients.
That strong work ethic applies to Don's community contributions as well. He coaches basketball and soccer and is always dedicated to player development. Don takes particular pride in being a positive influence in the lives of so many children.
